Rose

So I have the honor of watching a 4 year old little girl named Rose when her mother and father are both working.  Today will be our first day.  I am excited and nervous.  Preschoolers are precocious, little girl preschoolers are even more-so.  LOLl!  It'll be interesting.  I am up for the challenge.  It'll be fun to get to know this little girl, her likes, dislikes, personality, learning style, sense of humor.  Wish us luck!

The case of the perpetually missing spoons...

Spoons made in USSRImage via Wikipedia
When you open your silverware (or flatware as some refer to it) drawer, do you most often have an equal number of forks, knives and spoons waiting to be utilized??  Yes?  No?  Well, the answer for me would have to be no.  More often than not, the spoons have gone missing.

Not just the little teaspoons; but the soup spoons, the serving spoons and the plastic spoons I keep for just such an occasion when all the other spoons are missing.  How in the world do we go through so many spoons?  When I am loading the dishwasher (for the 5th time in a day) my spoons are already usually in their caddy.  If I have made soup for dinner, inevitably I will have to wash some spoons so we can partake of the soup I made.

It's true, I need to purchase more flatware/silverware.  With our expanding family, we will need more utensils.  I am a stay-at-home Mom, so we probably go through more utensils than those who have nobody at home most of the day.  I also cook most of our meals, perhaps that has something to do with it?  I don't know.  What I do know is, unless I have just emptied the dishwasher in the the last hour...chances are, when I reach for a spoon, one will not be clean or available for immediate use.  More than likely I will have to grab one out of the sink or the dishwasher and wash it by hand.

Does anyone else have this problem???

Bath or Shower?

Bosko plays the shower spray as a harpImage via Wikipedia
Perhaps this is too personal a question, but I am genuinely interested:  Do you prefer to bathe in a bathtub or a shower?

I prefer a bathtub typically.  There is a time and a place for a shower, but I enjoy the relaxation of lounging in the bathtub.  I enjoy the ease of shaving my legs in the bathtub.  I enjoy the possibility of bubbles in a bathtub.  I do NOT enjoy trying to wash my hair in the bathtub.  I have long hair so I do not wash my hair daily anyway.  So on my 'hair wash days', I take a shower.

What is YOUR preference and why?

5 things I just CANNOT do...

I am stealing this idea from a friend of mine.  I so enjoyed reading her post, I thought I would try it myself.

5 Things I Simply CANNOT do:

1.  I cannot parallel park.  I have tried and tried and tried.  I have determined for the safety of myself and others, I will walk, no matter how far.

2.  I cannot masticate my food properly.  I have tried to slow down while eating and chew my food the 25-40 times required per bite...but it just doesn't happen.

3.  I cannot move my ears without touching them.  My Grandpa Burkey could do this (when he was alive) and when I was a child I was always asking him to show me how.  I could never get the darn things to move!

4.  I cannot bring myself to pay for primping products.  I don't use hairspray, I don't buy lotion (I make my own), I don't dye my hair (anymore), I don't get my nails done or even paint them.  All of these types of things I view as frivolous (for myself) and I just can't bring myself to pay for them.

5.  I cannot do my own hair in fancy do-ups.  It's all down, all up in a ponytail or french braided.  That is the extent of my hair doing capabilities.  I WISH I was more talented...alas, I am not.

What can YOU not do??

Chick, chick, chickie!

We have 3 baby chicks.  We got them yesterday.  They are Light Brahma chicks and they are 3 weeks old.  We HOPE all 3 of them are hens.  (crossing fingers)

We need help naming them.  I like; Winkin, Blinkin and Nod.

What are YOUR suggestions?

Created to be his Help Meet by Debi Pearl

So I am not usually one to do 'book reviews' as they remind me all too much of my school days.  During those days, I often only read a couple pages in the front, middle and end of the book and the back of the book.  After completing this, I would then write a satisfactory book review and receive my passing grade.  Embarrassing, but true.

But, I am all grown up now and actually read the WHOLE book.  How very progressive of me!  ; )

This book is not for the faint of heart.  It is not for a woman who wants to be 'right' more than she wants to be 'happy'.  It is not for the woman who views her husband as an annoyance or a child to be chided and trained.  This book is for women who are serious about having a heavenly marriage and doing it God's way.  Regardless of how much pride will need to be swallowed in doing so.

I purchased this book for the first time shortly after Darren and I were married 6 years ago.  I got through, I don't know, about 1/4 of the book before I literally threw it across the room mumbling an expletive.  True story.  There was NO WAY I was going to 'belittle' myself in such a manner.  My man should be happy with me, in love with me, giving, caring and turning a blind eye to ALL other women just because that's what he is supposed to do.  Well, lets face it ladies, if any of us were doing what we are supposed to do and doing it all the time, we wouldn't need counselors, anti-depressants and/or self help books now would we?

This book gets down and dirty with how to keep your marriage happy, healthy and vibrant.  It's how to affair proof your marriage and how to find contentment and share it with your family.  This is a book of what women are supposed to do to and for men to keep the marriage alive.  This is NOT a book outlining what God says a man is supposed to do for a woman.  Don't get all caught up in the fact that the book never outlines what the MAN is supposed to do.  That is for our HUSBANDS to worry about.  Not us.  WE need to worry about what WE are supposed to do.  God will work on our husbands...just you wait and see.

Applying the traits outlined in this book (and found in the Bible) is a full time, every minute of everyday task.  But I surmise it is well worth it.  In just the few short days I have started applying some of these valued lessons, my husband has responded in kind and didn't even know he was doing anything different!?!?!  It works, ladies.  Who knew, the creator of all things (including marriage) outlined the key to a happy, healthy and loving marriage and all we have to do is read what He said and do it?  What a concept!!!

I highly recommend this book, but don't be upset with me if you get angry when you read it.  It's a lot to stomach and I am warning you right now.

My husband's crazy, revolutionary idea

My husband Darren has this quirky, slightly ridiculous idea about totally revamping the QWERTY keyboard.  He INSISTS it's the 'wave of the future'.  I will attempt to explain his idea here (as I don't totally understand it myself).  I truly don't even understand the need for such restructuring, but he is ardent that this will/should happen one day and will revolutionize typing as we know it.

So here is what I understand...he believes that the current spacing of the keys is very inefficient.  He submits that the keyboard should be 'upgraded' to a flat, glass screen.  Wherever on this screen you place your fingers, the computer/keyboard would recognize as the 'home row'.  The standard spacing of the keys would no longer apply as the computer/keyboard would 'learn' how you type and over time you would be able to make smaller and smaller movements as the computer learns to recognize your typing style.  Not only that, but the whole surface of what is now known as the keyboard location on a laptop would be this glass screen.  It would be used not only as a keyboard, but as a total information input/interaction device for the computer.  (Huh??)

Again, I do not understand the need for such technology.  However, ladies and gentlemen, you heard it here first!  When you see this new development take shape in the near/distant future, you can say it's not new to you.  You read about it years ago in a blog named, 'A Provincial Life'.

Here's to the future...

YOU be the Marriage Ref

My long time friend, Rebecca gave me this idea.  Darren and I like to watch the TV show the Marriage Ref.  We think it's pretty funny.  We would like to share our argument and have YOU decide who is right and who is wrong.  LOL!  I will give you my side of the story and then Darren will give you his side.

Darren and I would like to have 3 maybe 4 children.  In order to do this and still be able to fit all of our family in one vehicle, Darren says we need to buy a minivan.  I HATE minivans.  I don't hate other people's minivans.  I just don't want one.  Before Darren and I got married I told him I would never own a minivan.  This is not something I am just springing on him now.  My suggestion is to get a larger SUV.  THAT I am ok with.  A minivan is a 'no go' for me!

This is Darren.  My argument: A minivan may not be the sexiest car out there but it is the most practical for a family.  Not only does it hold far more children than our current vehicles do but the minivan is designed for ease and flexibility.  Riding on a car chassis, it sits lower to the ground; this is safer and makes climbing in and out easier for little ones.  The doors slide open to allow for simple entrance and egress.   Improved gas mileage is another perk over our mid-sized SUV.  With the size of car seats these days it will be impossible to pack another one into the back seat.  Shall we wait until our eldest is 14 and can safely sit with the air bag in the front seat before having another child?  Debbie has stated she will not drive a larger SUV.  A minivan fits our needs by balancing out gas mileage, comfort and practicality.  Frankly, I can't think of a better car for the growing family than a vehicle designed exactly for such a purpose: a minivan.

5 Things I cannot live without...

One of my friends posted a blog about this and I thought it was lots of fun to read so I decided to steal it from her for my blog.  Thanks Rebecca!!

1.  My calendar.
I use one called 'Christian Family Organizer'.  Click here to see it on Amazon.com.  I love, love, love this calendar.  It has a grocery list, menu, space for to-do lists and a weekly memory verse.  I would be LOST without it!

2.  Facebook
I know, I know, this sounds very junior high of me...but it is truly the main way I keep up with friends and family (especially those who live out of state).  Perhaps I should pick up the phone more often...but that's probably not going to happen so I rely heavily on this social application.

3.  My Moby
Now that I have 2 boys...my hands are FULL.  Zachary is young enough to be in a baby carrier and I LOVE IT!  It gives me hands-free time to go shopping, get things done around the house and outside and still spend time with and interact with Luke.  I would be very frazzled without it.

4.  My schedule
Since I have been a mother of 2...my schedule has been all out of whack.  I am searching for a 'new' schedule that will fit my needs.  Consequently, I feel all out of sorts because I am never quite sure what I will be doing today.  I feel very 'reactive' no longer proactive.  Will I do laundry today?  Will I dust and vacuum today?  Oooo, the floors haven't been done in 2 weeks...better pay them some attention.
The hunt for a new, workable schedule begins...

5.  Quiet Time
I should write an "Ode To Quiet Time".  Without this hour to hour and a half block of time in my day...I may just fall into the abyss of Complete Craziness!!  During this hour I get to regroup, actually have some 'quiet' in my house and just take a deep breath.  It is a REQUIREMENT for me.  Without it...life is bad.  LOL!

Well, there you have it folks.  What are YOUR 5 things you cannot live without???

Going Backward...

I stole this idea from one of the blogs I follow:  All That Is Good.  I thought it was a good idea so I will attempt my own version:

1 Year Ago:  Still reeling from the loss of our son Daniel, Darren and I are working on getting our lives back together.  We have learned the value of family and friends in times of strife.  I make a personal decision to always aide any family or friend during tough times (if at all possible) with a meal, help with the house or just a sympathetic ear.

2 Years Ago:  Our first year of vegetable gardening.  We have NO IDEA what we are doing.  We plant a HUGE garden and hope for the best.  We decide if we can get ANYTHING to grow...we will have succeeded.

5 years Ago:  Newly pregnant with Luke, we are not even aware yet that in the next month I will be offered a job in OK and we will move to a condo we have never even seen before and Darren will move to a state he has never even visited before.

10 years Ago:  I was still single, working for Avaya (or was it still Lucent at that time?  I can't remember when the name changed) and making good money.  I enjoyed my job and hated all the red tape.  I was clueless about relationships (both same and opposite sex) and was blissfully unaware of the trappings of life.

Short, sweet and to the point.  Fun little trip down memory lane.  Would YOU like to give it a try??

25 Things...

This post was inspired by my good friend Rebecca.  Her blog can be found here.  She did this as a post and  it was really fun to read, so here is my attempt.

25 things you may not know about me:

1.  I have a Choctaw Indian heritage from somewhere in the mid-west ("No Man's Land" it used to be called).

2.  I HATE mopping.

3.  I really enjoy reading but I can't read in the car (whilst in motion), it makes me ill.

4.  My mother was in labor with me for over 36 hours...sorry Mom!

5.  I have never broken a bone (I am just not that adventurous).

6.  My husband is 5 years younger than me.

7.  I have NO PATIENCE for lines.  If there is a line at a potluck, I will wait until it has diminished before I go up to get something to eat, even at family gatherings!  HA!

8.  I am a judgmental person by nature and I have to work REALLY hard on keeping my mouth shut in public!  LOL!  It's true!

9.  Typically I don't like to read science fiction.  It's just too weird for me.

10.  The airbag in my car scares me.  I sit as far back from my steering wheel as my little legs will allow.

11.  I would LOVE to live on some acreage and have chickens, goats and even a cow!

12.  In general I don't like wine.  I just think it's yucky.

13.  When working in the kitchen, my husband says I do everything the most difficult way possible.  He just can't even watch me cook sometimes!

14.  I do not like seafood of any kind.  NONE.

15.  I am a closet vegetarian.  If there was no more meat in the world, it would not hurt my feelings.  I do eat meat, as it is good for me, but it has to be highly seasoned as I just don't enjoy the flavor.

16.  I don't know how to parallel park.  I have tried on many occasions and I have opted just to walk farther for the safety of myself and others.

17.  I have no sense of direction.  When I am given directions on how to get somewhere, I have to read them backward to get home.  I do not have that "feeling" like I came from over here or I live in this direction.  It is just not there!  I could get lost in my own home if I closed my eyes and spun around twice.  : )

18.  My parents have 4 children and I am #3.  I used to sign letters and notes to my parents in that manner.
Love,
#3

19.  I used to want to be a music teacher.  I can play the flute, piccolo, clarinet and saxophone.  I cannot, however, play the piano.

20.  I like to sing and in a choir or small praise group, I will sing the alto part.

21.  I and my family (husband and son) are learning sign language.  We can sign and understand over 100 words.

22.  I much prefer to read a real book than one of those electronic readers.  Call me old fashioned, but I just haven't warmed up to the idea yet.

23.  My mother and husband have a MUCH better sense of fashion and style than I do.  If it wasn't for them, I should never step out of my house.

24.  On the whole, I don't understand the allure of reality TV.

25.  I have recently discovered, God willing, that I would really like to have 4 children.  We'll have to see...

Now it's your turn!  It's more difficult than it looks.  I'd LOVE to read YOUR 25 things.

Overwhelmed...

I had my baby shower yesterday which was so much fun and so many wonderful ladies turned out to celebrate with me!  What a blessing.

Today, back in the REAL world where the baby's room is only half done, the kitchen is in the middle of being painted and there is stuff EVERYWHERE and all over the house, I am starting to feel a bit overwhelmed.

It's such a blessing to have so many projects going and so many wonderful gifts to sort through and put away, yet so daunting when it actually needs to be done.  I know Darren is overwhelmed with working and trying to help me with these projects and trying to get it all done like...yesterday.

I don't want to sound ungrateful.  It's not that.  It's that I am 7 1/2 months pregnant with a 3 year old at my feet and I am wondering if I can do it all...**sigh**

I have a whole new respect for all my mother friends and family out there who have been there and done that with more than 1 child.  You ladies are AWESOME and you should be told so!  **hugs**

Whining now over.  Back to work!

A lil' of this and a lil' of that...

I don't have anything specific to post about so perhaps I will try my hand and blog rambling.

Luke is doing REALLY well staying in bed at night lately.  I am so proud of my little man!!  He didn't get up ONCE tonight!!

My pregnancy is going well.  My OBGYN actually used the word "normal" to describe this pregnancy.  YAY!  This is my 4th pregnancy and the 1st time I have ever heard the use of the word normal to refer to any of them!  God is truly blessing us!

We still have not picked out a boys name.  We really have a difficult time with boys names for some reason.  I am hoping we can settle on one BEFORE the baby is born!!  LOL!

Ok, enough of the rambling...I do not think it is my strong suit.  One never knows until one tries!!  : )

The Road Less Traveled

This poem did not really hit home until I became a mother.  The choices we make, day in and day out, no longer only affect ourselves.  These choices, affect our family and friends as well.  In the past, my tendency has been to do things the "hard way", just for the sake of being different.  Not always is this a bad thing, not always is it good.  It DOES however make for good stories!

Since becoming a mother, I choose to stay at home with my children as long as the Lord will allow me to do so.  I choose to home-school my children.  I choose to be a Christian who strives to better herself.  I choose to learn to be loving and kind and gentle.  I choose to help those who need help.  I choose to show the world by my actions that our God is a God who loves, not hates.

In entering motherhood, I had to reflect on the roads previously taken, not only by myself earlier in life, but by my parents, my siblings and other parents I look up to.  So alas...I continue to take the road less traveled, but now for a very different reason.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth

Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better calm
Because it was grassy and wanted wear
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages since
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Just stuff

My friend Erin gave birth to twin boys last week.  They were in the NICU for a number of days and she was finally able to bring them home just a couple days ago.  I was sooooooo looking forward to getting to see her and the boys today.  Luke woke up with a 101 fever this morning.  Poor guy.  But that pretty much doomed my visit to see Erin and her family.  Oh well...later in the week will be just as fun.

Also, our church was having one service (all 3 services all together) today and announcing the church's new name.  I really wanted to go to that service as well...oh well.  I guess I can get the Cliff's Notes from some friends.

It definitely feels like fall here now in CA.  All the leaves are turning color and falling.  The weather has started to really cool off.  I love fall.  It is one of my favorite seasons here in CA.  But, with fall comes cold and flu season.  Yay?!?!?!?!?  All you moms and or medical staff out there know what I mean.  LOL!

My morning sickness has really subsided and now I only occasionally become nauseous.  I am so thankful for that!  I am now 14 weeks along.  I got to hear the baby's heart at my last Dr. appointment last week.  That is always the highlight of my Dr. visits.  I LOVE it!  Darren wasn't able to come with me to this last appointment...perhaps the next one.  It's nice when he is able to attend with me.

Luke's birthday is coming up quick.  His actual birthDAY is December 5th.  That falls on a Sunday and Darren works Sundays so we will be celebrating on Saturday.  I cannot believe he will be 3 in just a couple weeks.  Where oh where does the time go?  Will I wake up one morning and he is a teenager???  It feels like that sometimes.

I am so grateful for my friends and family here in blogland.  You have all been so supportive of me and whatever efforts or trials I seem to be going through.  Thank you.

May God bless you and yours this Thanksgiving.

The broom fell...company's coming!

What is it about the knowledge that you will be having company over that makes you finally open your eyes and 'see' the mess that your house has become?  It was fine (as far as you were concerned) just yesterday, but now...no, no, no...it will NEVER do to have someone ELSE see your house in this manner!!

Just tonight Darren says to me, "I think the secret to a happy home is having people over."  He meant that, even though we keep the house relatively live-able...it's never as clean as when we are expecting company.  Not to mention the perks to having friends in the house.  It seems to lighten the day and strengthen the soul.

Our friends Dave and Denise Highfill (and their children) will be coming over for dinner tomorrow night.  Earlier in the week I had noticed that the house needed a little straightening, but today, I noticed FAR more that needed to be tended to.  Now all of a sudden I am able to see the cobwebs in the corner.  I can now see the fingerprints on the sliding glass door.  Huh, how long has it been since I dusted my nightstand?  LOL!

When I was a small child, if my Mom told us it was time to clean the house we asked, "Who's coming over?".  We did very little house cleaning, that I remember, unless company was coming.  Well heck, there were 4 children living in the house.  I am sure at times, housecleaning seemed like an exercise in futility.  As I got older and the number of children in the house was only 2, our house was cleaned much more often.

Was my mother a bad housekeeper?  Before I had children I would have said a resounding, "YES!".  But our house was not foul.  It was cluttered, yes, but not scary.  Now that I have my son (and only 1 child so far), I can already well appreciate the mad dash cleaning ritual.

I like to think I am a pretty good housekeeper.  My house is not filthy.  The dishes are done nightly, and the rest of the household chores are done on a weekly basis if not more often.  Still, there is that lull that happens, everything is pretty much picked up.  The house has been dusted, for the most part.  You know how it goes.

If none of this is ringing true for you, perhaps you have no children. Better yet, perhaps you are a housecleaning goddess, in which case I need you to be my mentor for about 6 months.

Cheerful cleaning ladies!!

Internet Intermission

About 1 week before we went on vacation to Chicago, our internet modem died.  It was a couple of weeks past the 1 year warranty time frame and AT&T would not replace it.  Well, this really upset my husband and I am sure he had some choice words for the poor customer service representative with which he spoke.

Suffice it all to say, we switched from AT&T to Comcast Internet.  We were without internet service at the house for about 1 week.  As soon as the internet was back up, it was time to go on vacation.  So I have not been on the internet for going on 2 weeks now and am WAY out of the loop!

I apologize to any and all who tried to contact me during this time and were unable to.  And to all my fellow bloggers, I will be frantically reading to get caught up.  Please bear with me....
